The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, OECD, published a comprehensive report of life satisfaction, well- being and the impact of the economic crisis in 36 countries, including Turkey.

Not surprisingly, life satisfaction scores dropped considerably in countries worst hit by the crisis, such as Greece, Spain and Italy.

The report shows that it was not just the jobs and incomes people lost. The crisis eroded public confidence in institutions and in governments, too.

OECD’s report, titled “How’s Life”, looked at traditional economic measures such as gross domestic product as well as other indicators such as work-life balance, gender equality, civic engagement, education, health and leisure.

For general sense of well-being, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States and the UK scored the highest.

Turkey, along with Greece, Portugal, Hungary, Mexico and Chile had the lowest scores for life-satisfaction.

Life expectancy is highest in Switzerland, followed by Italy, Japan and Spain.

Switzerland scored the highest for health, too. In 2011, 85% or more people reported good or very good health. Surprisingly, Japan scored very low, with only one in three respondents saying they were in good health.

Education is an important indicator of well-being. Finland and Korea are the top countries for educational attainment. Compared to other OECD countries, UK scored lower, just about average.

For percentage of adults aged 25-64, with at least upper-secondary education, Turkey scored the lowest in educational attainment. The gender gap in education is also one of the widest in Turkey.

Another score where Turkey did the worst was for work-life balance. It was the country with the highest proportion of employees working the longest number of hours, followed by Mexico and Israel.

Social support networks were also the weakest in Turkey, Mexico, Greece and Korea. Iceland, UK, Ireland and Switzerland had the strongest social welfare.

Housing conditions where households had two or more rooms per person were the best in Canada, Belgium, Ireland, Norway and the Netherlands. Again, Turkey scored one of the lowest, along with Poland and Hungary. .

The OECD average for homicide rates is 2.23 homicides per 100,000 people. Mexico Brazil and Russian Federation are the countries where one is most likely to be murdered. Iceland, Japan and Norway are the places where the homicide rates are the lowest. Turkey is the seventh worst country for murders.
